Hot-dip galvanizing is a process consisting of immersing your steel stock tank pool in a bath of molten zinc.
It is chosen for its great resistance to corrosion, its durability and its versatility. Galvanized equipment is particularly appreciated in environments that experience more marked climatic variations.
This type of coating is extremely durable. However, it remains important to keep the quantity of chemical product below 1 ppm to avoid the risk of rust.
Shiny when it leaves the factory, the galvanized stock tank will become dull quite quickly. This is a normal and irreversible appearance. This is the result of the formation of a protective oxide layer on the surface. Wanting a galvanized stock tank that remains shiny would therefore mean removing a layer that is an integral part of the anti-corrosion protection of galvanizing.
My stock tank pool is dull
No stress here. This is completely normal, and even desirable! After a few days of exposure to the atmosphere, the zinc reacts with the ambient elements and a gray or whitish patina forms on the surface of the floor. The insoluble layer thus formed offers additional protection to your galvanized floor against corrosion.
Whitish deposits appeared on my stock tank pool.
These whitish spots, more commonly called “white rust”, appear when water or condensation has formed from certain elements transported or stored on the platform. For example, wooden pallets left on a floor for a long period of time.
This phenomenon mainly presents the disadvantage of a poor visual presentation, but in no way alters the quality of the galvanization.
Your galvanized stock tank pool offers incomparable advantages in terms of durability
To keep your equipment looking good for a long time, follow these tips:
- It is important to maintain a very low chlorine or bromine level between 0.5 and 1 PPM by testing your water regularly.
- If you see a white powder in some places, this is normal. No action is necessary.
- White deposits may appear, wash and brush these with a vinegar-based cleaner, such as CLR. Rinse and dry.
- If the coating is damaged or you notice iron rust, you can repair the affected area. Scrub the damaged section with a wire brush and then brush or spray cover it with a 92-95% rich zinc coating.
- Note that de-icing salt can cause premature aging of your galvanized floor.
- Never use a wax-based soap to clean your galvanized equipment. A layer of dirt will form on top of the galvanized which will be difficult to clean.
