How to maintain your stock tank pool, everything you need to know

To begin treating your pool water, Trevi recommends following several crucial steps to ensure the water is clean and safe for swimming. Here are the main steps based on general recommendations for pool maintenance:

Initial Cleaning :

  • Remove all leaves, debris and other dirt from the pool using a landing net.
  • Brush the walls and bottom of the pool to remove algae and dirt that may have accumulated there.

Filling and Circulation :

  • Fill the pool with water to the recommended level.
  • Start the filtration system and let it run continuously to ensure good water circulation.

Water Analysis :

  • Test the water to measure pH, free chlorine, calcium hardness and alkalinity levels. Use test strips or a pool water analysis kit.
  • Ideal levels are generally:
    • pH: 7.2 - 7.6
    • Free chlorine: 0.5 - 1 ppm
    • Alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm
    • Calcium hardness: 200 - 400 ppm

    Adjusting Parameters :

    • pH : If the pH is too low, add an alkaline product such as sodium carbonate (soda). If it's too high, add an acid like muriatic acid.
    • Chlorine : If the chlorine level is too low, add chlorine to your floating dispenser. If the level is too high, let the chlorine dissipate naturally or use a chlorine neutralizer.
    • Alkalinity : Adjust alkalinity with baking soda to increase it or with an alkalinity reducer to decrease it.
    • Calcium hardness : Add calcium chloride to increase hardness or use a water softener to reduce it.

    Shock Treatment :

    • Do not shock treat the stock tank pool. It is recommended to empty it and refill it.
    Algicide and Clarifier :
    • Add an algaecide to prevent algae growth.
    • Use a clarifier to help clump together small particles that may be removed by the filter.
    Filtration Maintenance :
    • Make sure the filtration system is working efficiently. Clean or replace filters regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Regular Verification :

    • Continue to test the water regularly (at least once a week) and adjust chemicals as needed.
    • Perform weekly cleanings to maintain clean, clear water.

By following these steps, you will ensure that your pool is ready for a safe and enjoyable swimming season.
