How a baptism works in a 2-foot-deep tank

With about 50 to 55 cm (20 to 22 in) of water, the person being baptized does not stand: they sit or kneel in the tank. The officiant, standing beside or in the tank, supports their back and neck and gently lowers them backward into full immersion, then helps them back up.

  • 6' rental tank: the person sits with legs extended and is lowered back along the length of the tank. The officiant stands outside, at the side.
  • 8' x 3' oval tank: more length and width; better suited to taller people, who can sit or kneel.

Preparing for the service

  1. Choose the spot: level ground, preferably on the ground floor or a concrete slab. Protect the floor with a tarp and mats.
  2. Fill: a garden hose is all you need. Allow about 30 to 60 minutes depending on water flow and tank size.
  3. Heat: with a 1500 W heater, plan to run it the day before for the 6' rental tank (about 12 to 16 hours to go from cold to lukewarm). For the 8' x 3' tank, allow about 24 hours with one heater, use two heaters, or partly fill with hot water from the building. Covering the tank with a tarp speeds up heating.
  4. Access: place a sturdy step stool and a non-slip mat on each side. Have towels and a change of clothes ready.
  5. Drain: through the drain plug, with a submersible pump or by siphon, to a floor drain or outdoors.

⚠️ Safety — please read before the service

  • Electricity: plug the heater only into an outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI — standard in Canada). Fully unplug and remove the heater before anyone gets into the water.
  • Weight: water is heavy. The filled 6' tank weighs about 700 kg (1,540 lb); the 8' x 3' tank, about 1,100 kg (2,425 lb). Avoid suspended floors, mezzanines and lightweight stages unless a qualified person or the building manager approves.
  • Slips: the tank bottom and surrounding floor get slippery. Use non-slip mats, a step stool and have someone help people out.
  • Children: never leave a filled tank unattended.

Is the tank suitable for all adults?
It works for most adults in a seated or kneeling position. For people with reduced mobility or who are very tall, the 8' x 3' oval tank offers more room. If the officiant needs to stand in the water, we also offer an 8' round tank; email us to discuss it.

Do you ship baptism tanks across Canada?

How does the rental security deposit work?
The $100 deposit is paid with the rental and refunded as soon as the tank is returned clean and in good condition.

Yes. Galvanized steel is made for the outdoors: a park, backyard or lakeside for a summer service.

Does the water need to be treated?
For a one- or two-day event, clean tap water is enough. Drain the tank after use.
